On April 12, our San Diego BC Alumni chapter will participate in the Ninth Annual Day of Service. We will again partner with Santa Clara University and spend the day sprucing up Our Lady’s School. Our Lady’s School is the oldest Catholic elementary school in San Diego. The school has sought the guidance of the Jesuit Order through the support of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish.
Two years ago we spent the Annual Day of Service with Our Lady’s School and learned that for a school with two campuses they only have one custodian. We were able to do a lot of maintenance that just can’t get done on a daily basis. We took down, rinsed and dried almost all of the school’s blinds, washed hallway walls, cleaned classroom window sills, and generally helped out with deep cleaning. One of the great benefits of coming together to serve is seeing everyone have such a fun time and make connections. Not only could we help our Jesuit friends here in San Diego but I am sure other partnerships came out of the day.
The latest service project our chapter held was in February at The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. BC brought over twenty volunteers for two shifts. We learned that the warehouse, which distributes about 20,000,000 pounds of food to San Diego County each year, only has 18 employees. There is NO way they could do all that without the help of volunteers.
