San Diego Eagles gathered for a day at the races Saturday. It was the penultimate day of the fall or Bing Crosby (or, to us, BC) season at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, “where the turf meets the surf.”

The chapter was able to fill five tables in the track’s Turf Club, which offers an excellent view of the track and finish line, as well as food and other refreshments. Even with the view, each table had a monitor, which enabled all to watch what was right in front of us. :)

There was no tally of wins and losses, but many in attendance expressed their enjoyment of the afternoon.

Racing season doesn’t come again until mid-July, with the next BC Season beginning in early November. We’ll look at have another event in one or both of the seasons next year.

San Diego Eagles gathered a couple of times this month — at brunch and at the beach.

A week later, we took to the beach — Fletcher Cove Beach Park. Here’s a photo from that excursion. Newly minted Golden Eagle Bill McDonald ’68 had left the gathering before this photo, having exceeded his annual beach time.

In the photo are Brian ’00 and Lissa Herrick Tsu ’00, with daughter Margot; Mike ’01 and Erin Holmes Carpenter ’02, with kids Dylan and Ella; and Michelle Duquette ’97. Her daughters, Anna and Elsa, were likely still playing in the ocean.

Thirty-plus San Diego BC alumni, family, and friends attended the fifth annual chapter Mass earlier today at Saint Thérése Chapel on the campus of Cathedral Catholic High School, San Diego.

Rev. John Auther, S.J., pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the only Jesuit parish in San Diego County, celebrated the Mass. Performing the readings were Bob Nascenzi ’78 and Mary Ann Scott ’75 and presenting the Eucharistic gifts was the Calkins family — Kevin Calkins ’00, Beth Van Brussel Calkins MA’03, and sons, Liam and newborn Paul. Kevin is principal of Cathedral Catholic.

Attendees gathered following Mass for a social with refreshments in the area adjacent to the chapel.
