On to NCAA final!

After trailing for most of the game, BC women’s lacrosse turned it on again in the fourth quarter to score three unanswered goals and defeat Syracuse, 8-7, this afternoon. The Eagles will play in their sixth consecutive national championship game, meeting #1 Northwestern Sunday at 9 am PT on ESPNU.

Kayla Martello scored the winning goal, putting BC ahead for the first time, with 3:31 left in the game. Jenn Medjid led the team with five goals, including two early in the fourth quarter to tie the game and set up Martello’s winning score. #3-seed BC held #2-seed Syracuse scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Syracuse scored twice within the first 95 seconds and took a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game, but the the Eagles came back to tie it 4-4 at halftime. Syracuse went up 6-4 early in the second half and led 7-5 entering the final quarter.

Early in the season, on February 19, BC and Northwestern met in Illinois. Then-#5 Northwestern beat the Eagles 15-14 to give BC its first loss. The Wildcats are 20-1 this season, with their only loss to Syracuse in the season opener. BC enters the championship game with a 19-3 record, and a 13-game win streak.

Thirty-eight San Diego Eagles and their friends and family members watched the Padres win the final game in the three-game series with the Red Sox Sunday and avoid a sweep by Boston. Jumping on Boston starter Corey Kluber for four runs in the first inning, San Diego won 7-0.

The Red Sox ended up out-hitting the Padres, 7-6, but four San Diego pitchers shut Boston out.

Seats were in Section 222. They were under shade all day. View toward home is above. Here’s view to outfield.

Here are photos of some of those in attendance. The balance between Padres and Red Sox fans was pretty even. Those who were fans of other teams wore BC gear.

 

Eagles ice Irish . . . again

Boston College lacrosse defeated Notre Dame, 20-6, today in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. The #3 seed Eagles will play in their sixth consecutive NCAA Final Four.

BC was remarkably consistent, scoring five goals in each of the four periods. And this was the fifth straight game in which the Eagles held their opponent to single digits, two of those opponents being then-#1 Syracuse and then-#3 North Carolina.

Eight players scored goals for BC, led by Belle Smith, who scored five goals. Jen Medjid added four goals and Kayla Martello scored three.

Overall, the Eagles improved their record to 18-3 for the season. Today’s win was their 12rth straight and their third over Notre Dame this year.

BC will meet #2-seed Syracuse on Friday, May 26 in a NCAA Tournament semifinal.
