Two dozen BC San Diego alumni, parents, and friends joined Terrence Devino, SJ, vice president and secretary of the University, for a book discussion in Del Mar Saturday, December 6. The group talked about The Circle, a novel by Dave Eggers, which was this year’s freshman class read at BC. The Circle chronicles the beginnings of a dystopian future brought about by increasing levels of digital connection, surveillance, and conformity.
Hosts for the event were Patty and Marc Brutten P’16, P’18. Accompanying Fr. Devino were Joy Moore ’81, H’10, associate vice president for alumni relations, and Marlo Tangredi MA’13, assistant director of alumni relations and liaison with the San Diego chapter.
Each year, under the auspices of the First Year Experience, incoming BC freshmen are tasked to read the same book. In the fall, the author of that book addresses the class in the First Year Academic Convocation, as Eggers did this year. Previous speakers at the convocation have included then-Senator Barack Obama (2005), Senator John McCain (2006), and Ann Patchett (2009).
