San Diego Eagles went out to score some birdies on Saturday, February 1, at The Links at Lakehouse in San Marcos. (Sorry for my tardiness in posting this.) There were few birdies, but higher scores aplenty and much enjoyment at spending the morning on a golf course in February.
The outing was arranged and overseen by Fred Hanover, a BC parent and coach of the UC San Diego varsity men’s golf team, who managed the same event in 2024. Before the BC group ventured out on the executive course (9 holes, all par 3), Fred coached at the driving range, offering pointers and encouraging words.
This group of Eagles was notable for an unusual range of graduation dates. Joining us for the first time, but we all hope not the last time, was John Stevens, MD, Class of 1951. Not a typo. 1951, nearly 74 years ago. Jack, 94 years old, is a retired Navy Captain and flight surgeon who says he golfs “about twice a week.” He acquitted himself very well on the course and said at lunch he hopes to go to his 75th class reunion (!) next year.
At the other end of the class range was Yilun Zhang, Class of 1921, a spread of 70 years.
Also notable was an atypical “beat the pro.” Fred Hanover, coach and professional golfer, gave participants the opportunity to “beat the pro” on one of the holes, i.e., to make a shot closer to the pin than his. This time, Megan Schofield, not a veteran golfer, did just that. Her reward — all of the group knowing of her achievement.
The group closed the round with lunch.
